Nursing in 2050: Emerging Views of Nursing Theory-Based Practice

Gail J. Mitchell, RN; PhD

Associate Professor, York University, 10 Yonge Street, Suite 2201, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5E 1R4, gailm @yorku.ca

In this column, nurses affiliated with Newman's theory of health as expanding consciousness and King's conceptual framework for nursing respond to questions about how nursing practice might evolve with the technological, medical, and moral developments of the year 2050. The authors offer thoughtful and hopeful imaginings about how nurses will rely on nursing theory to guide their ways of thinking and being with in the year 2050 and beyond.

Key Words: health as expanding consciousness • King's conceptual framework • Newman • nursing in 2050 • theory-based practice
